International Clouded Leopard Day is an annual event dedicated to the protection of one of Asia's most mysterious and rare wild cats — the clouded leopard. The purpose of the day is to raise awareness about the importance of conserving this vulnerable species and its habitat.

When it is celebrated
The event takes place every year on August 4. It was established in 2018 at the initiative of Howletts Wild Animal Park in the United Kingdom.

Why it is important
Clouded leopards (Neofelis nebulosa) are endangered due to:

* destruction of their natural habitat in tropical forests;
* poaching for their beautiful fur and bones;
* exotic animal trade.

They play an important role in the ecosystem by helping regulate populations of other animals.

Features of the clouded leopard

* It is a unique species, not directly related to big cats (tigers or lions), but not to small cats either.
* It has outstanding hunting skills and can climb trees headfirst downward.
* It has large canine teeth comparable in proportion to saber-toothed cats.

How it is celebrated

* Zoos and conservation organizations hold special events, lectures, and campaigns.
* Exhibitions, workshops, and educational programs for children are organized.
* Materials about the life and protection of clouded leopards are published online.
* People can make donations or support wildlife conservation funds.

Interesting fact
Despite the name, clouded leopards are not close relatives of true leopards. Their name comes from the characteristic "cloudy" pattern of spots on their fur.
